Today, Friday, February 24th, the White House banned The New York Times, The L.A. Times, and CNN, among others, from the daily press gaggle for being “fake news.” What an incredibly un-American thing to do.
Smacking of authoritarianism, this was an outrageous and dangerous act by Sean Spicer, under orders, we assume, from Donald Trump and Steve Bannon. From my point of view, and to paraphrase the great John Dean, Richard Nixon’s former White House counsel, who told truth to power, “there is a cancer growing on the Donald Trump presidency.”
Blaming the press, and in the process, tricking millions of gullible, loyal, poorly informed Trump supporters into believing that the free press is “the enemy of the American people” and that they should trust Trump over the American free press, is a page torn right from the playbook of Hitler and Stalin along their paths to dictatorship.
Shame on Trump. Beware of Steve Bannon. Even greater shame on the 45th President for lying so so often and so blatantly, and for demonizing the press, the intelligence agencies, and anyone else who raises a finger in protest. Trump’s actions are anti-American and unconstitutional. Now is the time to worry. Now is the time to step up and speak out.
Five weeks into his presidency, it seems that Donald Trump is purposefully driving the Ship of State onto the rocky shoals of authoritarianism.
it this 2017, or is it 1984?
